Beirut, Martyr's Square, 2016Martyr's Square is a square in the heart of downtown Beirut, Lebanon.
For long time it was the main meeting place of the city and became a popular venue for cinemas and coffee-houses. During the Lebanese Civil War, it formed the demarcation line that divided the city in half.
Nowadays Solidere, a public-private company, founded following the vision of the former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, is in charge of planning and redeveloping Beirut Central District. Conflicts over urban space have continued in the politics of reconstruction.
